“[Black people] are at the heart of the American story, and without our story, there is no authentic American story.” – Dr. Herron Keyon Gaston
February is Black History Month – or what Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson calls “American History Month.” As Maya Angelou and others have pointed out, there is no American history without Black history. We came across a series of posts on Black historical figures by the artist Rhiannon Giddens that we think you might enjoy. Also in this month’s issue, we’re covering two recent research reports. The first report, from the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, reveals donor acquisition and retention continue to decline. The second, by Building Movement Project, analyzes responses to a nationwide survey of nonprofit leaders to learn what they need to maintain and build their organizations to fulfill their missions. In this month’s final feature, which focuses on a factor in workforce shortages, our colleague Jessica Mendieta rounds up recent and pending state legislation that will make finding and affording child care easier on parents (including through support of nonprofit child care providers, in some cases). Thank you for the positive feedback many of you sent last month on the newsletter’s new look and easier-to-digest format. We hope you will continue to find value in our reporting and the resources we share. |
