Frequently Asked Questions

I want to start a nonprofit. How do I get started? Can the National Council of Nonprofits assist?

The National Council of Nonprofits does not provide direct assistance in starting a nonprofit organization. We recommend you review our resources on how to start a nonprofit and contact your local state association of nonprofits for additional assistance.

Can the National Council of Nonprofits assist me with funding?

No, unfortunately, the National Council of Nonprofits is not a grantmaking organization. The Foundation Center and GrantStation can assist your organization with finding funding opportunities.

Does the National Council of Nonprofits serve as a fiscal sponsor? How can I get more information on fiscal sponsorship and find a fiscal sponsor?

No, the National Council of Nonprofits does not serve as a fiscal sponsor. You can view our resources on fiscal sponsorship for more information and visit the website of the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors for additional resources and assistance.

I don't see a state association of nonprofits listed for my state. How do I start one?

From our 20+ years of experience as the backbone of our state association network, we have learned that a state association of nonprofits needs the initial and ongoing leadership, commitment, and financial support of charitable nonprofits and grantmakers in its own state to flourish. You may want to look to state associations in neighboring states that can provide insights on the process and challenges involved.

Where can I find a list of all nonprofits in the United States/my state/a specific area?

The IRS maintains a list called the Exempt Organizations Business Master File. The BMF is free to download and is separated into large Excel files for each state (sometimes multiple files, depending on how many nonprofits are in that state).
