Other fallout
David Thompson of the National Council of Nonprofits told Morning Tax that it’s unclear now whether the IRS is electronically accepting other versions of the 990 form that outlines nonprofits’ financial information, but that being able to file is the biggest concern for groups already classified as tax exempt. Thompson added that his group was worried that the IRS would face a large backlog of new tax exempt applications whenever it’s fully operational again. “Once the government reopens, the pressure to reduce the shutdown-caused backlog will likely cause the IRS once again to rapidly grant tax-exempt status to unqualified organizations, putting all legitimate charitable organizations at risk,” he said.
