Despite the tax squeeze caused by exempted properties, many organizations argue their property tax-free existence provides greater benefits to the community.

Tish Mogan, standards for excellence director at the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations, said we already have some sense of how communities suffer after a cash drain on nonprofits, thanks to the 2015 state budget impasse. The consequences from a permanent tax requirement for nonprofits would likely be even more severe, she said.

“Most nonprofits are already extremely strapped.  Most of them are already using a huge amount of volunteers,” Mogan said.
