Jennifer Chandler

Jenny's past service for charitable nonprofits includes being a legal advisor, board member, senior staff member, program volunteer, and grantmaker. Prior to joining the Council of Nonprofits in July 2009, Jenny took a deep dive into 'what can go wrong?' by conducting internal audits and risk assessments for charitable nonprofits while serving as Senior Counsel and Director of Special Projects for the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, a national nonprofit that helps other nonprofits understand and manage risk. Before that her work focused on good governance and ethical practices as Assistant Project Director of the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector (convened by Independent Sector, Washington, DC) - work that contributed to the original version of Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice. In 2000, following nine years in private practice as a lawyer with a concentration on tax-exempt organizations, Jenny was recruited from her private law practice to serve as the founding director of  the New Jersey program of Probono Partnership, a nonprofit that provides pro bono legal services to charitable nonprofits. She served as Deputy Director of Probono Partnership between 2000-2005.

Jenny is a former board member of the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (Trenton, NJ), the Madison Area YMCA (Madison, NJ), the Overlook Hospital Foundation (Summit, NJ), the Princeton Day School (Princeton, NJ), Episcopal Community Development Corporation (Newark, NJ), the Hyde and Watson Foundation (Warren, NJ) as well as the American Camping Foundation (Indianapolis, IN). She also served as Chair of the Pro Bono Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and on the New Jersey Governor’s Advisory Council on Volunteerism, and currently serves on the Advisory Board at American University for the Masters Programs in the Department of Public Administration and Policy. Jenny has a Bachelor's from Dartmouth College and a law degree from Boston College Law School. When she's not at work, she can be found playing tourist in our nation's capitol: at an art museum, farmers' market, biking, or hiking in a national park with her dog.
