June is Pride Month. At a time when the LGBTQ+ community should be celebrated, it is being attacked.

As of the writing of this newsletter, the ACLU is tracking 588 bills proposed at the state level this year attacking the rights of LGBTQ+ people. The Secretary of Defense is removing the name of late activist (and Navy veteran) Harvey Milk from a Navy ship. Books celebrating pride are being taken off the shelves in schools and libraries. Rights are being attacked, and history is being erased. This is not a time for silence.

Even small gestures can mean a lot in providing a safe space. Keep expressing your pride, and continue raising your voice in support of the LGBTQ+ community every day.

In this recent article, Nonoko Sato, President & CEO of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, addresses the current challenges facing nonprofits. Importantly, she points out how much of what is happening is not new; it’s only new to those that haven’t faced these challenges before.

Sato outlines eight guiding principles for meeting this moment, including embracing community, building solidarity, and honoring the wisdom of both youth and elders. She encourages readers to allow themselves to feel deeply, acknowledging the hurt and anger without losing sight of the joy and beauty that still surround us. The article concludes with reassurance for us all that – like those before us – we will emerge from this moment together.
