The Food Bank of the Rockies is offering assistance to federal employees who may be struggling to make ends meet during the government shutdown.

The government has been partially shut down for more than two weeks after Congress and the White House couldn’t reach an agreement on a spending bill because President Trump wants money for a border wall.

“We want all those facing difficulties to know emergency food is available for them. Federal employees have been tremendous partners, supporting our mission for many years,” food bank interim CEO Michelle Barnes said in a news release. “Now it’s our turn to help these families. Those affected by the shutdown are encouraged to seek assistance. No one should go hungry during this unexpected crisis.”

The regional food bank is adding food distributions, and anyone in need can search for locations at www.foodbankrockies.org/get-help/ or call 303-371-9250.

Emergency distributions will take place at the following times and locations:

  • Friday — 9 a.m.-11 a.m., Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, 6000 Victory Way, Commerce City
  • Saturday — 1-4 p.m., Food Bank of the Rockies, 10700 E. 45th Ave., Denver
  • Jan. 18 — 1-3 p.m., 24 Hour Fitness, 12039 West Alameda Parkway, Lakewood.

The agency may add more distribution sites, depending on the length of the shutdown.

For those who live outside the Food Bank of the Rockies’ area, regional food bank locations can be found at www.feedingcolorado.org.

Jewish Family Service, 3201 South Tamarac Drive in Denver,  is also waiving its regular income requirements for government employees who are furloughed during the shutdown. Any employees with a government ID or documents that show they are government employees will be eligible to receive services. To find out more about services, go to www.jewishfamilyservice.org.

The Colorado Pet Pantry is also offering pet food assistance to government employees, and a pantry schedule can be found at www.coloradopetpantry.org.
