(WLUK) -- Dozens of nonprofits across the state received pandemic recovery funds, including some in Northeast Wisconsin.

More than $422,000 recovery funds were awarded to 52 nonprofits by Wisconsin Humanities.

“We received 114 applications expressing more than $1.6 million in need.” says Dena Wortzel, Executive Director of Wisconsin Humanities. “We weighed factors including need, location, strength of their public humanities work, the audience that organizations serve and how they would use these funds to help them address the impacts of the pandemic.”

The first round of grants were funded through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

They will help organizations with everything from salary support, to utility bills, to improving online access.

Some local nonprofits include: Appleton Historical Society, History Museum at the Castle, Manitowoc County Historical Society. Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and Neenah Historical Society.

A second round will open Sept. 15 with a deadline of Oct. 15. It will offer up more than $340,000 in additional funds.
