During Utah's 2016 Legislative Session HB31 Enterprise Zone Amendments was the piece of legislation UNA watched most closely. This bill was signed into law on March 1, 2016. While the bill was good for rural businesses, it removed the tax credit that nonprofits were eligible to receive for qualified donations in rural enterprise zones. During the session UNA and the nonprofits affected were able to speak to both sponsoring legislators (Representative Sandall and Senator Okerlund) who have given their commitment to finding a solution in the interim to reactivate these tax credits. Now, we roll up our sleeves to do the real work along with the rural nonprofits, the legislators and the Governor's Office of Economic Development to create new legislation that supports rural nonprofits.
Nonprofit Advocacy is most successful when it is a year round effort. Connect with your legislators outside of legislative sessions; invite them on a tour or to an event to inform them of the impact you have in their community. Through this work you elevate the profile of all nonprofits in Utah. Locate your Representative and Senator here. Share UNA's fact sheet of Nonprofit Impact in Utah.
