LB 958 - Bad Tax Policy

NAM voices its opposition to LB 958
The Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM) is a statewide membership organization that represents nonprofit organizations of every size and mission. Nebraska's nonprofits provide services to everyone, from the most vulnerable to the most resource-secure. In fact, every Nebraskan uses a nonprofit every day and one in eleven workers in our state are employed by a 501(c)3 nonprofit business.

Nebraskans value good schools and safe communities. Nebraskans also value paying our bills and making tough decisions for what we can and cannot afford.  The $29 million in tax cuts that are being discussed as part of the amendments to LB 958 without a designated revenue source is bad tax policy.  LB 958 would force future lawmakers to take funding from other vital services Nebraskans need such as health care, education and public safety. Additionally, LB 958 sets a dangerous precedent, putting policy-making responsibility to pay for the tax cut on the next Legislature. This "kick-the-can" approach to tax cuts has led to budget crises in states across the country including Oklahoma and Kansas.

Nebraska offers a good quality of life, and the Legislature should focus on making sure the state has the resources necessary to continue this strong tradition.  Nebraska needs a tax system that allows the state to invest in things that boost its economy and that average families rely on, like top-notch neighborhood schools, world-class universities, and safe communities.

For these reasons, NAM voices its opposition to LB 958.

Sincerely,
