Statement on Trump Foundation and the Johnson Amendment

Washington, DC - Tim Delaney, President and CEO of the National Council of Nonprofits, released the following statement in relation to the suit filed by New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood regarding the Donald J. Trump Foundation:

“The longstanding Johnson Amendment is a core pillar of nonprofit organizations. Violation of it is not just a violation of law, but also a violation of the public’s trust. All 501(c)(3) organizations –  charitable nonprofits, houses of worship, and foundations – earn their tax-exempt status every day by shepherding tax-deductible contributions to improve our communities, enrich lives, and aid those in need. We are effective because we bring people together across party lines to solve problems. The divisiveness of partisan politics that currently bedevils our country is exactly why more than 5,800 nonprofits and foundations, 4,500 religious leaders, 100 religious and denominational groups, state law enforcement officials, 72 percent of voters, and 89 percent of evangelical pastors agree that nonprofits should not utilize their resources – their names, reputations, funds, or other assets – to aid partisan campaign efforts. The Johnson Amendment must remain in place.”
