Season for Sharing: How the new tax law could mean a drop in charitable donations

Printer-friendly version

The new laws could begin to affect non-profits as early as this fall, said Kristen Merrifield, CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits.

“That’s when donors will be thinking about end-of-the-year giving, but they’re no longer incentivized to do that,” she said.

The last time Congress passed a tax overhaul like this was more than 30 years ago. Though it’s all still new, Merrifield said it’s already started to ripple.

Some donors have sent messages saying "here’s my donation for 2017, but next year I won’t be able to do the same thing," she said.
