Scranton nonprofit launches protest on state budget inaction

More organizations are at the end of their rope with the budget stalemate, having drawn down credit lines and reserves, tapped donors, cut hours or even shut down for a time to stretch out their operations, said Anne Gingerich, executive director of the Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

“Organizations are getting to the point where they are about to shut off the lights,” she said. “They are increasingly willing to speak out and poke the bear.”

Many of the dollars destined for nonprofits are federal dollars funneled through the state, but now stalled in Harrisburg as nonprofits take out loans and incurred interest unnecessarily, Ms. Gingerich said.
