Rule would encourage nonprofits to collect SSNs with donations

“It’s a recipe for disaster,” President of the National Council of Nonprofits Tim Delaney said.

The proposal would encourage nonprofits to collect the Social Security numbers of donors for donations more than $250 to give donors a better way of verifying their contributions.

Delaney says it could keep people from giving.

“A massive chilling effect on charitable contributions,” he said.
