Using those methods is pretty common, said Tish Mogan, standards for excellence director at the Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

For example, she said, several prominent organizations, such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army, operate thrift shops.

"We want all nonprofits to diversify their revenue as much as they possibly can and to not rely on one or two sources," she said.

Mogan said nonprofits should not rely heavily either on government funding or charitable donations, because they can disappear.

"Especially with the political arena in terms of all the things that are up for grabs right now, a government program could be completely shut down," she said. "That's where you as a nonprofit need to make sure that you have many different ways of garnering income."
