Like it or not, nonprofits are going to have to figure out how to comply, said Anne L. Gingerich, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations. Some are very worried, others don't seem terribly panicked, she said.

"I think there are various levels of concern," Gingerich said. "We don't oppose the idea of nonprofit employees making equitable wages. We really firmly believe our employees do good work and should be compensated. Having said that, I think it will take a bit for the nonprofit sector to come up to speed. We have done good work on the back of our employees for a long time and this is kind of a wake-up call."

PANO has scheduled a conference call Wednesdaywith representatives of the U.S. Department of Labor to help its members get their questions answered.
