"Nonprofits in Oregon as a business class are a major economic force of employment," says Jim White, executive director of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon. Their impact is not limited to "the positive public benefit that they provide our communities, but they are also a significant employment engine."

Backing up his claim is a recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study of nonprofit employment and wages, which found that Oregon had the highest share of such jobs – 12.2 percent in 2012 – among its neighboring states. That translates to about 172,000 working Oregonians.
