Ms. Risley believes the key to the success of Food Runners is that it “gives people a chance to do something for their fellow San Franciscans.” The work is hands-on. Volunteers are assigned routes, say to pick up leftovers from the Ritz-Carlton and deliver them to North Beach Citizens community center.

“When volunteers can see the impact in their own backyard, rather than six states away, it helps build loyalty to the cause,” says Rick Cohen, chief operating officer for the National Council of Nonprofits, which represents thousands of groups across the country.
