Foundation Leaders: Philanthropic Investments Can't Close IL Budget Gap

Speaking at a Tuesday press conference, representatives from the Chicago Foundation for Women, the Donors Forum, the Polk Bros. Foundation, the Woods Fund Chicago and other organizations stressed that private philanthropy is no "magic bullet" for the state's fiscal problems.

As part of his budget plan for the 2016 fiscal year, which starts July 1, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed significant cuts to higher education, Medicaid and other essential services. The governor has rejected calls for increased taxes to help balance next year's budget, which is under a tighter squeeze due to the January rollback of the state's 2011 temporary income tax hike.

"In order for the sector to keep doing the good work the people of Illinois rely on, the state budget must include revenue," stressed Delia Coleman, director of strategic initiatives at Donors Forum.
