Rick Cohen, spokesman for the National Council of Nonprofits, says crowdfunding sites are particularly successful because they are more likely to go viral, and are a good way to quickly get a mini-fundraiser up and running. He points to the success of the "ice bucket challenge" that benefited the ALS Association.

"Crowdsourcing campaigns allow for quick mobilization," he says. "It allows the message about why it’s so important to give to be more personal. When it's a friend or family member asking you to give to a cause, you may be more likely to donate than if you received a fundraising email from a nonprofit. In that respect, they can help raise additional dollars."
