Another challenge that comes with rapid growth is "mission creep," or the tendency to lose focus at the nonprofit, said Rick Cohen, director of communications at the National Council of Nonprofits.

"While it's okay to expand the scope ... the last thing you want to do is not be true to the mission, because that's the foundation for all nonprofits," he said. "Trying to run a comic con and having the capacity to do education in the classroom could be challenging. In that kind of situation, if a program is just dominating things, they may want to consider spinning it off into its own organization and maintaining a relationship."
