Charity Inc.: Advocacy for nonprofits

Charity Inc.: Advocacy for nonprofits

Printer-friendly version

Nonprofits, like everyone else, are susceptible to any changes in the economy. Unfortunately, nonprofits are sometimes disproportionately affected by those changes, and any small downturn could cause headaches for years to come.

Nonprofits should be actively paying attention to what is happening this legislative session. Organizations must set aside time to read the news, speak with legislators and their staff, mobilize constituents and take stands on issues that matter to them. Additionally, nonprofits should be able to translate their respective missions and outcomes to demonstrate how they affect Oklahomans.

A holistic policy picture about impact should be the new paradigm and priority for nonprofits. Nonprofit leaders and volunteers should be able to show the public and our policymakers how their missions not only affect the lives they serve but how they save taxpayer dollars, help the economy and improve the state’s standards compared with other states.

We encourage all nonprofits, large and small, to dedicate time and resources to advocacy and public policy, particularly in this legislative session. Make sure you know your lawmakers, federal, state and local, and communicate with them about your outcomes, your stories and the issues that matter to your organization and the people you serve. They need to hear from all of us.
