Charity check-in: Outlook only modestly better for Arizona charities

"The non-profit sector has taken longer to rebound from the economic downturn than the for-profit sector," said Kristen Merrifield, chief executive officer of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits.

This partly reflects the lagging effects of the labor market. The recession technically ended in early 2009, yet job growth really didn't accelerate until late 2012. Arizona, unlike the U.S. overall, still hasn't recovered all the jobs lost in the downturn.

And while more people have gone back to work, many aren't earning as much money as they used to, creating a chronic struggle to make ends meet for lower-income working households.

"The needs persist," said Steven Seleznow, CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation.
