Foundation Allies

The vast majority of the Council of Nonprofits’ revenue is contributed by grantmaking foundations, and individuals. This is a natural result of our position as a national “infrastructure” organization working through our State Association’ members to build the capacity of community-based nonprofits to serve communities across the country.

Our generous Foundation Allies recognize that as the only organization focusing on sectorwide issues at the state level, our work is critically important to their grantees as well as to thousands of other nonprofits. As state budget crises intensify, the Council of Nonprofits’ work to defend nonprofits against encroachments of their tax-exempt status, to help them lead more effectively, collaborate, and be strong participants in civil society through the democratic process – as well as to raise awareness about principles of ethical, transparent and “best” practices – becomes even more urgent.

Investing Allies 2011/2012

These generous foundations provide a significant share of our revenue, and pay careful attention to the impact our Network is making as it aligns with their grantmaking priorities:

  • The Ford Foundation
  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
  • Rockefeller Brothers Fund

Supporting Allies 2011/2012

Foundations that do not have a specific nonprofit sector support program support the Council of Nonprofits through our Foundation Ally program. The suggested annual fee for Foundation Allies is $10,000 for national foundations and $5,000 for regional grantmaking organizations and community foundations.
