As the nation experienced the frightening economic freefall in 2009, the National Council of Nonprofits developed an expanding series of Special Reports on the Economic Stimulus and Recovery to help nonprofits, policy makers, journalists, and the public better understand the intersection between nonprofit organizations and our nation's economy. Given the popularity of that Special Reports series, in 2010 the National Council of Nonprofits will continue to expand our online clearinghouse of resources to help nonprofits cope with the economic crisis by researching and publishing analyses of issues concerning nonprofits across the country. The first of the 2010 Special Reports will examine the fiscal crises being experienced by state governments - and the severe pain that is bringing to nonprofits in communities across America.

As state governments across the country grapple with severe budget deficits, many are placing extraordinary burdens on nonprofits. On March 16, the National Council of Nonprofits released a special report documenting how states are delaying contract payments to their nonprofit partners, slashing funds for essential programs, and imposing new fees and taxes on 501(c)(3) organizations. The report encourages leaders of governments, foundations, and nonprofits to work together to address challenges posed by state budget crises.

In 2009, the National Council issued nine Special Reports. They began with analyses of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (stimulus fund) and tips for applying for stimulus grants, shared news about how the White House and different states were handling stimulus grants, and evolved into documenting how the economic collapse was jeopardizing the ability of nonprofits to continue upholding the social safety net upon which so many people depend. Two of the most popular reports were: Special Report No. 8: A Respectful Warning Call to Our Partners in Government: The Economic Crisis Is Unraveling the Social Safety Net Faster Than Most Realize, and Special Report No. 9: Strategies Being Used by Nonprofit Leaders to Cope with the Nation's Economic Crisis.
The National Council and its network of State Associations periodically issue a variety of white papers, reports, surveys, and studies that focus on diverse topics from the economic impact of the sector in a particular state to compensation and benefits for nonprofit employees. State Association Members and other members of the National Council's network, including its supporters, have access to many of these studies and survey reports.
